N2 v Rosslyn
Ground: Tudor (but technically an Away fixture)
Date: 25/9/10
Pitch condition: slow and spongy.
N2CC beaten by Rosslyn. Rosslyn 140 for 9. N2CC 129 for 9.
The teams met on a cold, cloudy and windy afternoon. It was an early start and play commenced soon after 12.30. It was a time game with innings of 40 overs. Rosslyn batted first.
Rosslyn got over to a good start and in the first 15 overs reached over 60. Butler and Dodd bowled tightly but the 2 openers made 38 and 41 and the opening bowlers were unable to make a break through. Rosslyn were looking to be going for a big score but things changed with a tight spell from Newbery who removed the top order for few runs conceded (8-3-9-3), and some sharp fielding that resulted in 3 run outs, most notably by Anil Shah who through the stumps down from long off. Finally Josh Newman turned up ( late but with permission and a valid reason) and took up wicket-keeping duties from Bhatt. Bhatt in his new capacity bowled 3 nippy overs and picked up 3 wickets (2 bowled and 1 caught wicket-keeper) to finish off the innings. Rosslyn had been held to 140 and victory seemed a possibility.
Time for tea. Tasty and good. But of course not up to Mrs Parker’s standard.
The innings began stutteringly with the openers Dyer and Bhatt going cheaply. But Newman coming in at 3 played a fantastic innings scoring 70 runs. Initially supported by Sweeting who made a slow but steady 18 and then Dodd with a more swashbuckling 18 it was looking good. Newman fell at 110 after hitting a 6 and being caught behind trying to do it again off the next ball ( tip of the day: block the next ball after a six). Dodd took up the banner but fell at 125. Then a bit of a collapse. Newbery holed out at mid off and Rosslyn were the victors.
Time to pack up the kit for the winter.
